"But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless Word they have spoken. For by your words, you will be acquitted, and by your words, you will be condemned." – Matthew 12 36-37

 

When Jesus returns, He will hold everyone accountable for their words and actions. This includes even a person's "every careless word." Scripture implies that there will be two major judgments that occur at the end. Christ will be a judge at both. One is for all who have rejected Christ (John 3:36) and refused God's gift of eternal life by putting their faith in Jesus (John 5:22, 29; Revelation 20:11, 15). Non-believers will be judged on their righteousness and fall short of reaching God's standard (Romans 3:23). This is often referred to as the "white throne judgment."

The other judgment will be of those who are Christians. This is sometimes referred to as the judgment seat of Christ or the "Bema seat." There, Jesus will examine each believer's words and works to determine what rewards will be given or withheld in eternity (2 Corinthians 5:10). This judgment does not determine eternal destiny, nor can a believer lose their salvation as a result (John 10:28).

 

There is no greater challenge than taming a tongue through a series of mistakes. James said taming our tongues cannot be attained by human efforts. Only God can tame our tongue. Human beings often make mistakes due to their tongue. Thus, the Bible says, "There is no one righteous, not even one…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:10, 23). The Apostle John stressed, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8). And sins committed through words are the greatest sins of all. Therefore, Jesus said He would judge us according to our words (Matthew 12:36-37). 

 

A tongue is a small part of the body, but it impacts the entire body (James 3:2). As we put bits into the mouths of horses to control them, our tongue benefits our body if controlled. For example, a ship is steered by a very small rudder but controls the entire direction of the ship (James 3:4). Likewise, our tongue is very small but an important part of our body because it leads us in the right or wrong direction. A tongue is like a fire that can spread quickly and potentially cause damage, as a small kindling fire can escalate into a forest fire (James 3:5). In Israel, due to the arid weather, it is often impossible to extinguish fires once they break out. A tongue carries a similar risk. The author of Proverbs wrote, "A scoundrel plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire" (Proverbs 16:27). Our tongue is potentially harmful since our words can reach other people far and wide. 

 

A Jewish Rabbi once said, "Hands of a tongue determine to live and die. Does a tongue have hands? No! Just like hands kill a man, a tongue can kill someone. Hands kill only when they approach a man, but a tongue kills from the far side of the world. A tongue reaches all earth and even to heaven." People can identify the victim and the offender when someone physically beats a person in public. However, vicious slander and rumors can have a profound impact on someone who lives far away. Three things are irrevocable: a flying arrow, a spoken word, and a lost opportunity.

무익한 말

 

“내가 너희에게 이르노니 사람이 무슨 무익한 말을 하든지 심판 날에 이에 대하여 심문을 받으리니 네 말로 의롭다 함을 받고 네 말로 정죄함을 받으리라” - 마 12:36-37.

 

 

예수님은 다시 재립하실 때 모든 사람의 말과 행동에 대해 묻고 모든 무익한 말에 대해서도 책임을 물을 것입니다. 성경은 마지막날에 두 가지 중요한 심판이 있고, 그리스도께서 두 심판의 책임자가 되신다고 말합니다. 하나는 그리스도를 부정하고(요 3:36) 예수님이 믿음을 통해 주시는 하나님의 선물인 영생을 거부한 모든 사람이 심판을 받고(요 5:22-29; 계 20:11-15). 불신자들은 자신의 의롭다는 행위로 심판을 받습니다. 그리고 하나님의 기준에 도달하지 못하는(롬 3:23), 백보좌 심판을 받게 되어 있습니다 .

 

또 하나의 심판은 그리스도인들에 대한 심판입니다. 이것은 종종 그리스도의 심판 또는 "베마 자리"라고 불리는 심판입니다. 예수님은 그리스도인 개인의 말과 한 일을 검토하고 어떤 영원한 어떤 보상을 주실 것을 결정하는 심판입니다(고후 5:10). 이 심판은 영원한 천국과 지옥을  결정하는 심판이 아니기 때문에 믿는 자는 이 심판에서 구원을 상실하지 않습니다(요 10:28). 

 

사람들이 말에 실수하지 않도록 혀를 길들이는 것은 매우 어렵고 힘든 일입니다. 야고보는 인간의 힘과 노력으로는 혀를 길들일 수 없다고 말합니다. 우리의 혀를 제어하실 수 있는 분은 오직 하나님 한 분이십니다. 사람은 혀로 많은 실수를 합니다. “기록한 바 의인은 없나니 하나도 없으며… 모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하더니”(롬 3:10, 23). 사도 요한은 “만일 우리가 죄 없다 하면 스스로 속이고 또 진리가 우리 속에 있지 아니할 것이요”(요일 1:8)라고 말합니다. 사람이 말로 죄를 짓는 것보다 더 큰 죄가 없습니다. 예수님은 우리가 한 말에 따라 각자를 심판하신다고 말씀하십니다(마 12:36-37).

 

혀는 작은 지체이지만, 온몸 전체를 어거하는 놀라운 힘이 있습니다(약 3:2). 우리가 타고 다니는 말을 통제하기 위해 입에 재갈을 물리는 것과 같이, 우리 혀도 잘 통제되고 길들여지면  유익을 가져올 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 배는 작은 키로 배의 방향을 결정합니다(약 3:4). 마찬가지로 우리의 혀도 매우 작지만 삶의 옳고 그른 방향을 결정합니다. 또한 혀는 불과 같아서 작은 불꽃 하나가 커다란 숲 전체를 태우듯이 온몸을 파괴할 수 있습니다(약 3:5). 이스라엘 건조한 날씨 때문에, 불이 숲에 한 번 붙으면 큰 불길이 되어 잡을 수가 없는 것처럼 혀에도  큰 위험성이 있습니다. 잠언 기자는 “불량한 자는 악을 꾀하나니 그 입술에는 맹렬한 불 같은 것이 있느니라”(잠언 16:27)고” 말합니다. 혀는 사람들에게 영향을 주고 해를 끼칠 수 있고 멀리 있는 사람에게까지도 상처를 입힐 수 있기 때문입니다. 

 

한 유대인 랍비가 말했습니다. “생사가 혀의 손에 있다. 혀에도 손이 있는가? 없다. 손으로 사람을 죽이듯이 혀로도 사람을 죽인다. 손으로는 앞에 있는 자만 죽이지만, 혀는 화살처럼 멀리 가서  사람을 죽인다. 혀는 온 땅과 하늘까지 간다.” 폭행과 타격은 면전에서만 할 수 있기 때문에 피해자와 가해자가 누구인지, 그리고 그 이유를 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 누군가를 중상모략 하고 사악한 소문을 퍼뜨리는 것은 멀리 있는 사람에게 치명적일 수 있습니다.  세상에는 돌이킬 수 없는 세 개가 있습니다. 날아가는 화살과 뱉어 버린 말, 그리고 이미 지나간 기회입니다.
