"Through love and faithfulness, sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil." – Proverbs 16:6

 

Proverbs 16:1–9 reflects on the heart's intention to make plans and the LORD's rule over that planning. Committing one's ways to God with reverence is the wise way to make plans. The LORD has a purpose for everything He created (1 Timothy 4:4). This continues the main section of the book of Proverbs: a compilation of short, general-case statements of wisdom.

 

In the prior proverb, Solomon wrote about the inevitability of punishment for those too arrogant to acknowledge God (Proverbs 16:5). The best way to avoid evil consequences is to avoid evil actions by following God's truth (Proverbs 1:7; 15:24). The ultimate means of atonement—of "making up for" sin—comes through God Himself, in His steadfast love and faithfulness.

No human sin goes unpunished. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin are death." That includes separation from God in this life and the next. Thankfully, God has provided a way to escape this punishment through His mercy. Romans 6:23 continues, "But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our LORD." God loved the world of sinners so much that He sacrificed His only Son, Jesus, for our sins. He faithfully promises to grant forgiveness and eternal life to all who turn away from evil and turn to Jesus in repentance and faith. Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life" (John 5:24).

 

All human sin stems from not fearing God and not acknowledging His existence. A corrupt person does not have a heart for God, so they do not fear God. The Apostle Paul recorded, "There is no fear of God before their eyes" (Romans 3:18). Therefore, human sin stems from unbelief and atheism. Those who have not experienced being born again have no fear of God. 

 

Fearing God has both positive and negative sides. All Christians should fear and revere God, knowing His holiness and glory. To offer proper worship, we should have a heart of fear for him. Fearing God is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). Cornelius, in the book of Acts, was a God-fearing man, and as a result, he received the gift of salvation from God (Acts 10:2). The fear of God also helps a new Christian to grow continuously. Fearing God brings a trembling fear and terror before the LORD. Christians do not sin in this world when they possess fear (Proverbs 16:6). The writer of Hebrews also said, "Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!" (Hebrews 12:9).

 

Ananias and Sapphira were killed because they tried to deceive the Holy Spirit and had no fear of God (Acts 5:1-10). God judged them to make people revere Him and to keep purity before God. Corinthian's lives were taken because of their sin. The Apostle Paul said, "Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the LORD in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the LORD. A man should examine himself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. Anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the LORD eats and drinks judgment on himself. Many of you are weak and sick and have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 11:27-30). Therefore, Christians should live a holy life with a heart of gratitude for God's grace and blessings.

   

Today's Prayer: Pray for family members or friends walking in spiritual darkness. Ask that the light of the world will dawn on them.

여호와를 경외함

 

“인자와 진리로 인하여 죄악이 속하게 되고 여호와를 경외함으로 인하여 악에서 떠나게 되느니라” - 잠 16:6

 

잠언 저자는 계획을 세우는 인간의 의도와 그 계획에 대한 하나님의 통치에 대해 16:1-9에서 말씀하고 있습니다. 자신의 앞날을 경건한 마음으로 하나님께 맡기는 것이 계획을 세우는 현명한 방법입니다. 하나님은 그의 창조하신 모든 만물에 대한 목적을 가지고 계십니다(딤전 4:4). 잠언 저자는 짧지만 일반적인 지혜의 말씀을 우리에게 정리하여 소개하고 있습니다.  

 

솔로몬은 하나님을 인정하기에는 너무 교만한 사람들에게는 형벌이 불가피하다고 기록하고 있습니다(잠 16:5). 악한 결과를 피할 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법은 하나님의 진리를 따르고 악한 행동을 피하는 것입니다(잠 1:7; 15:24). 죄를 사해 주시는 방법은 오직 하나님의 변함없는 사랑과 그의 신실하심을 통해 하나님께서 직접 우리의 죄를 용서하시는 것입니다. 

 

인간이 죄를 지으면 반드시 처벌을 받게 되어 있습니다. 바울은 "죄의 삯은 사망이요"(롬 6:23) 라고 말합니다. 여기서 사망은 이생과 저 생에서 하나님과 분리되는 것을 의미합니다. 감사하게도, 하나님의 자비하심으로 우리가 죄의 형벌에서 피할 수 있는 방법을 마련해 주셨습니다. 바울은  계속해서 "하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라"(롬 6:23) 고 말합니다. 하나님은 죄인들을 사랑하셔서 속죄의 희생 제물로 예수님을 주셨습니다. 하나님은 회개하고  믿음으로 악에서 돌이켜 예수님게로 나오는 모든 자들에게 죄용서함과 영생을 주신다고 약속하고 있습니다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내 말을 듣고 또 나 보내신 이를 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고 심판에 이르지 아니하나니 사망에서 생명으로 옮겼느니라" (요 5:24).

 

인간의 모든 죄의 근원은 하나님을 존재를 부정하고 그를 두려워하지 않는데 시작됩니다.  타락한 인간은 마음에 하나님 두기를 싫어하기 때문에 두려워 하지 않습니다. 바울은 “저희 눈앞에 하나님을 두려워함이 없느니라(롬 3:18)라고 기록하고 있는데, 인간의 죄는 불신앙과 무신론에서 생겨나기 때문에 거듭나지 못한 자들은 하나님을 두려워하지 않습니다.

 

하나님을 경외함에는 긍정적인 면과 부정적인 면이 있습니다. 모든 신자는 하나님의 거룩하심과 영광을 깨닫고 경외해야 합니다. 하나님께 합당한 예배를 드리려면 하나님을 경외하는 마음을 가져야 하는데 하나님을 경외하는 것이 지혜 근본이기 때문입니다(잠 9:10). 사도행전의 고넬료는 하나님을 경외하였기 때문에 구원을 받았습니다(행 10:2). 그리고 하나님을 경외하는 마음은 영적 성장에 큰 동기가 됩니다. 하나님을 경외하는 마음을 가지면 하나님을 두려워하게 되며 신자들은 이러한 두려움 마음 때문에 세상에서 범죄 하지 않습니다(잠 16:6). 히브리서 기자도 “또 우리 육체의 아버지가 우리를 징계하여도 공경하였거든 하물며 모든 영의 아버지께 더욱 복종하여 살려하지 않겠느냐”(히 12:9)라고 말합니다. 

 

아나니아와 삽비라는 하나님을 두려워하지 않고 성령을 속임으로 죽임을 당했습니다(행 5:1-10). 하나님은 초대교회 성도들로 하나님을 경외하게 하고 하나님 앞에서 순전한 삶을 살도록  무서운 심판을 내리신 것입니다. 고린도 교회 성도들 중에도 그들의 죄로 인해 생명을 잃은 자들도 있었습니다. “그러므로 누구든지 주의 떡이나 잔을 합당치 않게 먹고 마시는 자는 주의 몸과 피를 범하는 죄가 있느니라 사람이 자기를 살피고 그 후에야 이 떡을 먹고 이 잔을 마실지니 주의 몸을 분변치 못하고 먹고 마시는 자는 자기의 죄를 먹고 마시는 것이니라 이러므로 너희 중에 약한 자와 병은 자가 많고 잠자는 자도 적지 아니하니”(고전 11:27-30). 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 은혜에 감사하며 하나님을 경외하며 거룩한 삶을 살아가야 합니다.

 

 

오늘의 기도: 아직 영적인 어두움에 살고 있는 가족식구들과 친구들을 위해 기도하고, 세상의 빛이 그들에게 동터오도록 기도하십시오. 

기도 지침: 예수님의 생애에서 기도는 일이었고, 사역은 상급이었다. 나에게 기도는 전쟁준비이지만 예수님에게 기도는 전쟁 자체였다. 기도하였기 때문에 예수님의 사역을 마치 우등생이 훌륭한 점수를 받는 것과 같았고, 또는 완주하여 금메달을 상을 받은 마라톤 선수와 같다. – 해돈 로빈슨
